Canyon sits twenty seven miles north of Duluth along US-53, in Northland Township. It is an unincorporated community, so there is no municipal sewer to reach anybody out here and there is not likely to be. Few Minnesota townships run a wastewater system of their own, because piping low density country costs far more than the ground can carry. Every property here treats its own waste on its own land.
Hellwig Creek runs through the community, and the elevation puts this ground well above the lake. That combination shows up in the soil pits. Shallow soil over Precambrian bedrock is the rule across this part of St. Louis County, and near a creek the seasonal water table climbs into the profile as well. A trench field needs clean unsaturated soil under it, roughly three feet of it, and plenty of parcels up this way come up short.
When they do, the sand comes to the site. A mound is a field built above natural grade in imported washed sand and dosed by pump. It costs more than trenches and takes more lawn. On a lot with rock two feet down it is also the only permitted system available, which is worth knowing before the estimate rather than after.
